What ‘Deadpool 3’ Could Mean for the Future of the MCU

When Disney acquired Fox in 2019, the fate of Deadpool and other R-rated franchises was left up in the air. The Merc with the Mouth’s snark and propensity for violence doesn’t exactly fit the family-friendly Disney image. The chances of him receiving a third cinematic outing seemed unlikely. That’s no longer the case. Another movie is currently in the works. Rejoice!

Kevin Feige recently told Collider that they’re currently working on a script for Deadpool 3. Furthermore, the movie will also be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, suggesting that the franchise will receive an edgier makeover. That’s good news for fans seeking bloodier fare. The only downside is that the movie won’t hit screens for quite some time.

It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now… It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”

Marvel recently announced a swarm of future projects and Deadpool 3 isn’t at the top of its list of priorities. It’s very possible that the third Deadpool movie won’t hit screens for another five to 10 years. But look on the bright side: the fact it’s even being considered is proof that Marvel is willing to diversify its content even more.

Perhaps this means that Marvel won’t sterilise some other upcoming movies that fans want to see a mature rating applied to. The upcoming Blade reboot, starring Mahershala Ali, is the one that immediately comes to mind.

The studio hasn’t shared many details about what the daywalker’s next film will entail yet. But if Feige and co. are serious about adding Deadpool to the MCU, letting Blade show some fangs makes sense. The film is the perfect opportunity to see how this type of fare can work in the universe’s overall ecosystem.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might even come with an adult rating. The film promises to fully embrace the comics’ horror elements and be the franchise’s scariest film yet. The movie could also introduce Blade into the saga and pave the way for The Midnight Sons, but that’s me dreaming big. Still, never say never.

Of course, Marvel has shown that edgier fare can work within the parameters within the MCU in the past. Daredevil, Luke Cage, The Punisher and Netflix’s other small-screen adaptations existed in that world yet remained largely independent from it. That would work for Blade. That said, it’d be great to see Deadpool sass it up with Marvel’s A-list heroes.

It remains to be seen how Deadpool and other Marvel miscreants will factor into the studio’s plans. But there’s no denying that this development creates a future of exciting possibilities to look forward to. Will see get some Punisher movies? How about some Elektra? Make it happen, Marvel.

That’s not all. Disney recently announced that an Alien series and Predator reboot are currently in the works. The company will also add Disney Star to its streaming service, which is dedicated to mature content. The House of Mouse plans on catering to all tastes in its pursuit of world domination.
